The committee was charged with advising the Chairman of the Board of Governors and Board of Trustees, as well as the President of the Corporation and University, with "respect to the buildings, grounds and equipment occupied by or utilized by the University." Albert E. Meder came to Rutgers as an instructor in mathematics in 1926. Between his arrival and his retirement in 1968, he held many positions at Rutgers, including Acting Dean of Douglass College, Secretary of the University, Dean of the University, Dean of Administration, and finally Vice Provost and Dean of the University. His records reflect his activities in these offices and show his relationships with other members of the Rutgers community, many of whom reported to him.

The Provost's Cabinet was established under Provost Mason W. Gross and continued under Richard Schlatter's tenure until its discontinuance in 1972. The records in this collection consist mainly of meeting minutes and reports. The collection contains minutes from Meeting No. 1 on July 8, 1953 through Meeting No. 155 on June 14, 1971. It also includes correspondence and material from the Provost's Cabinet Committee on University Governance.
