Scope and Contents

The Dick Sudhalter papers, artifacts, and audio recordings comprises research files, professional papers, and notated music. The research files generally pertain to Sudhalter’s books, particularly Bix: Man and Legend; Lost Chords: White Musicians and Their Contribution to Jazz, 1915-1945; and Stardust Melody. The professional papers contain materials related to Sudhalter’s career as a performer, writer, and educator, and detail some of the controversies regarding his writings. The music within this collection is comprised mainly of photocopies of notated music from Paul Whiteman and Hoagy Carmichael. This collection also includes three boxes of open-reel tapes.
